Maintains offshore wind turbines with constant work at height.

What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Vocational training in renewables, electrical or industrial electromechanics, fluent in power electronics and controlled torquing.
  • The full, current GWO Basic Safety Training package (first aid, manual handling, fire awareness, working at heights and sea survival) — the sector's minimum standard.
  • Installed-OEM certification (Siemens Gamesa, Vestas — per farm) and the operator's electrical/HV-awareness clearance.

Basic STCW

  • GWO BST — Basic Safety Training (Global Wind Organisation): Working at Heights, Sea Survival, Manual Handling, First Aid, Fire Awareness

Specific courses

  • GWO Advanced Rescue Training and nacelle/hub evacuation
  • Marine transfer: CTV boat landing and motion-compensated W2W gangways
  • Wind SCADA and remote alarm diagnostics
  • Blade rope access (IRATA as reference — indicative)

Indicative experience

Indicative: 1-2 years in onshore wind or industrial maintenance before the offshore step; the OEM requires supervised hours per turbine platform before signing off interventions.

Observations

A growth sector with Spanish and European offshore wind: GWO-technician demand outstrips supply. Campaign-based or 14/14 SOV rotations (indicative). Progression: technician → lead technician → farm supervisor → O&M management.

Maintains offshore wind turbines: transferred by CTV or walk-to-work gangway, climbs the tower for diagnostics and corrective work on converters, blades, gearboxes and hydraulics, works on ropes when blades demand it and closes every visit against the farm's SCADA. Combines power electronics, mechanics and vertical work with weather-window logistics.

Key responsibilities

  • Preventive and corrective maintenance of nacelle, blades and generator.
  • Work at height in gondola (up to 100m) with harness and lifeline.
  • Daily CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel) boat transfers to the towers.
  • Fault diagnosis using SCADA and OEM tools.
  • Change of components: filters, gears, sensors and control systems.
