Dynamic Positioning Officer (DPO)

Also known as: DPO · Dynamic Positioning Operator · DP Officer

Operates the dynamic positioning system to maintain the platform in exact position.

What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Marine base: STCW II/1 deck-officer certificate (or higher) with current bridge watchkeeping.
  • Nautical Institute DPO certificate: induction course + DP sea time + simulator course + further sea time and the master's statement of suitability (phases and days per the current NI scheme — verify detail).
  • Unlimited class for DP2/DP3 units (the certificate's class follows the class of the unit where sea time was earned).

Basic STCW

  • A-VI/1
  • A-VI/2
  • A-II/1 o superior
  • OPITO BOSIET

Specific courses

  • The unit's FMEA and annual DP trials: operational reading of failure modes
  • Reference management: DGNSS, HPR/acoustics, taut wire and their weighting
  • Capability and consequence analysis with the well connected
  • Emergency-disconnect (EDS) drills coordinated with Subsea and Driller

Indicative experience

The NI scheme requires completing its supervised console sea phases before certification; indicative on MODUs: 1-2 hitches as junior DPO before senior watches, plus unit-specific familiarisation with its FMEA.

Observations

The NI certificate is DP's de-facto world standard. Progression: OOW → junior DPO → senior DPO → Chief Officer/Master of a DP unit; the parallel technical route is the ETO's DP maintenance. In red status, this decision protects well and riser.

Holds the floater over the well without anchors: operates the dynamic-positioning console watching references (DGNSS, acoustics, taut wire), available thrust and failure consequences, manages the alert states (green-yellow-red) with drilling and executes the emergency disconnect if the vessel leaves the envelope. No operable DP, no drilling: this watch is a well barrier.

Typical watches

  • 6 or 12 hour guards on DP console

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain the MODU in exact coordinate using computer-controlled thrusters.
  • Compensate for wind, waves and currents without using anchors.
  • Continuous monitoring of the DP system (DP-2 or DP-3).
  • Alarm management and manual intervention in the event of system failures.
  • Communication with IOM in the event of variations in position or environmental conditions.

Operational scope

  • Bridge DP Console
  • propulsion control room
  • rotating guards
