Mud Engineer / Fluids Engineer

Designs and controls the drilling fluid, essential for well safety.

What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Engineering (chemical, petroleum, civil) or chemistry, plus the fluids company's mud school (SLB M-I SWACO, Halliburton Baroid — sector examples).
  • Standardised fluids testing per API RP 13B (water- and oil-based) mastered in the rig lab.
  • Valid fundamental well control (IADC/IWCF level 2 — indicative per contractor) plus BOSIET/offshore medical.

Basic STCW

  • A-VI/1 (required for overnight stays)
  • OPITO BOSIET current

Specific courses

  • Product chemistry: viscosifiers, weighting agents, inhibitors and compatibility
  • ECD management, lost circulation and treatment pills
  • Hazardous substances: SDS, PPE and oil-based spills
  • Solids-control equipment: shakers, centrifuges and their tuning

Indicative experience

Indicative: 1-2 years as a supervised junior mud engineer after mud school before running a well alone; HPHT and oil-based wells demand further campaigns.

Observations

Service-company personnel embedded in the operation: density recommendations are coordinated with company man and Toolpusher — the mud is a primary well-control barrier. Progression: mud engineer → senior/project fluids coordinator.

Designs and maintains the well's drilling fluid: formulates densities and rheologies to support the wellbore and control pressure, treats the mud against contamination (gas, salt water, clays), manages the chemical stock and adjusts the system for each section. Poorly-run mud costs stuck pipe, lost circulation or an unstable well.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and maintenance of physicochemical properties of drilling fluid.
  • Daily laboratory analysis: density, viscosity, pH and filtration.
  • Calculation and addition of chemical additives to optimize the sludge.
  • Inventory control of barite, bentonite and special additives.
  • Prevention of loss of circulation and outbreaks (kick) through density control.
