What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- Engineering (petroleum, chemical, mechanical) or higher technician, plus the service company's cementing school (Halliburton, SLB — sector examples).
- Command of cement classes and testing per API Spec 10A and associated API practices.
- Valid fundamental well control (IADC/IWCF level 2 — indicative) plus BOSIET/offshore medical.
Basic STCW
- A-VI/1
- OPITO BOSIET
Specific courses
- High-pressure cementing units and treating lines operation
- Primary and remedial cementing: plugs, squeeze and losses
- Additive chemistry: accelerators, retarders, defoamers and fluid-loss control
- High-pressure safety: line testing, zone restriction and communications
Indicative experience
Indicative: 1-3 years as supervised operator/helper after school before full-job responsibility; critical jobs (production liners, kick-off plugs) require further history.
Observations
Third-party personnel under the unit's permit system; the job is coordinated to the minute with Driller and Toolpusher. Progression: operator → senior specialist → district cementing supervisor.
What this role does
Executes the well's cement jobs: designs the slurry with the lab (density, thickening time, additives), operates the high-pressure pumping unit, launches plugs and verifies displacement, and answers for each casing string being sealed to the formation. The last string's cement is also part of the well barrier: its quality is verified and filed.
Typical watches
- Specific operations; intensive manned operations
Key responsibilities
- Pumping cement slurries at high pressure between formation and casing.
- Design of the cementation program (stages, volumes, pressures).
- Guarantee of structural integrity and isolation of pressure zones.
- Coordination with the drilling team during casing operations.
- Real-time cementation monitoring (RTOC — Real Time Operations Center).
Operational scope
- Cementing unit
- Drilling floor during casing
- Mixing laboratory
