What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- Technical or engineering background (electronics, geoscience, mechanics) plus the service company's internal programme (SLB, Halliburton, Baker Hughes — sector examples).
- Service-specific clearances: radioactive-source operator/supervisor per the country's nuclear authority, and perforating-explosives handling under local licence (indicative per jurisdiction).
- Unit access: BOSIET/FOET with CA-EBS, offshore medical and A-VI/1 per flag.
Basic STCW
- A-VI/1
- OPITO BOSIET
Specific courses
- Pressure-control equipment: lubricator, stuffing box/grease head and pre-job testing
- Source transport and custody (IAEA reference) and personal dosimetry
- Perforating: RF-silence safety, firing circuits and misfire verification
- Basic log interpretation and acquisition QC
Indicative experience
Indicative: 2-4 years in the service company's field programme (trainee → operator) with supervised jobs per service type before operating alone.
Observations
Third-party personnel aboard the MODU: integrated into the unit's permit-to-work and induction. Progression: operator → chief field engineer → the service company's district supervisor.
What this role does
Operates the well-logging unit: runs evaluation tools on electric line (e-line) or slickline through pressure-control equipment, acquires the logs that confirm whether the well is commercial and, when required, fires the perforating guns. Works with wellhead pressure, radioactive sources and explosives — three major hazards in one billet.
Typical watches
- Specific Well Evaluation Operations
Key responsibilities
- Operation of the electromechanical cable unit for lowering measuring tools.
- Real-time porosity, pressure and hydrocarbon data collection.
- Operation of punching tools (casing drilling for production).
- Safe handling of radioactive sources (if applicable).
- Basic data interpretation for field adjustments.
Operational scope
- wireline unit
- well head
- Data analysis laboratory
