Primary qualification
- Spain (typical route): Higher Technician in Maintenance of Thermal and Fluid Installations (RD 220/2008) or equivalent training in industrial refrigeration/HVAC (as a guide).
- Personal fluorinated-gas handling certification (in Spain, RD 115/2017) under the European F-Gas framework (Regulation (EU) 2024/573, replacing 517/2014).
- Valid seafarer medical certificate per flag.
Basic STCW
- STCW Basic Safety Training (A-VI/1) to sign on.
- Crowd Management (A-V/2) per muster list (Regulation V/2, passenger ships).
- Security awareness training (A-VI/6-1).
Specific courses
- Manufacturer training on the installed chillers and compressors (Carrier, York/Johnson Controls or others depending on the ship — as a guide).
- HVAC controls and automation: the ship’s BMS, control loops and chilled-water network balancing.
- Sanitary temperature and cold-chain records for USPH/VSP and the F&B department’s HACCP.
- Refrigerant safety: refrigeration machinery spaces, leak detection and handling of alternative refrigerants (CO2, HFOs) per installation (as a guide).
Indicative experience
As a guide: 3-5 years in industrial refrigeration/HVAC (plants, hospitals, large buildings) and a first onboard contract alongside a veteran technician before taking the refrigeration duty alone. On large ships the area is covered by 2-4 technicians under an engineer officer; the daily volume combines cold-room rounds, cabin calls and leak control of the refrigerant inventory.
Observations
Typical route: shore refrigeration technician → Reefer Engineer → lead HVAC technician → hotel services engineer within the engine department, with a bridge to the officer career if the licence is pursued (see engine department profiles); the fishing counterpart is the Freezer/Reefer Technician (see profile). Professional judgement: the F-Gas regulation turns every leak into a compliance matter — mandatory periodic checks according to each unit’s CO2-equivalent charge and documentary records (as a guide) — and the fleet trend is migrating to low-GWP refrigerants, demanding continuous technical retraining. In provision rooms, an unrecorded temperature deviation can cost a sanitary non-conformity on top of the goods.
What this role does
On a cruise ship, air conditioning and the cold chain are not auxiliaries: they are part of the business. This position sustains habitability (thousands of climate-controlled cabins on tropical itineraries) and provisioning (weeks of stores in cold rooms), under two demanding frameworks at once: the sanitary one (temperature records for USPH/VSP and HACCP) and the environmental one (the European F-Gas regulation, with leak checks and per-unit records). A severe HVAC failure can force the cancellation of calls or the entire voyage.

Key responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the ship’s air-conditioning plants: chillers, air handling units, cabin fan-coils and BMS control.
- Maintain the provision refrigerated and freezer rooms and the galley and bar refrigeration, logging temperatures for HACCP and USPH/VSP inspections.
- Manage refrigerant gases: leak control, recovery, charge records and compliance with the European F-Gas regulation.
- Diagnose and prioritise breakdowns with hotel impact (cabins without climate control, a room in alarm), coordinating with the galley, provisions and reception.
- Carry out planned maintenance (PMS) of compressors, condensers, evaporators and seawater exchangers.
