What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- Training in Art History, Fine Arts or art-market management (degree or master's); there is no specific maritime qualification for this position.
- In-house accreditation from the art concessionaire (the operator's auctioneer training programmes, e.g. Park West Gallery). A shoreside auctioneer licence is not required in international waters, but may be required for sales during port calls depending on jurisdiction (to be verified).
Basic STCW
- STCW A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training and A-VI/6-1 security awareness.
- STCW Regulation V/2 passenger-ship training: emergency familiarisation, plus crowd management if assigned passenger duties in the muster list.
- Valid seafarer medical certificate (ENG1 or flag equivalent).
Specific courses
- Live auction technique, public speaking and room engagement.
- Cataloguing, authentication and art handling (etching, lithography, serigraphy, limited editions and originals).
- Consumer, warranty and returns rules applicable to onboard and in-port sales (per flag and ports — indicative).
Indicative experience
As a guide: 1–3 years in galleries or auction houses, or a prior stint as onboard Art Associate; the concessionaire trains and promotes internally. Starting as an assistant on a large ship before running one's own auctions is the norm.
Observations
Typical route within the concessionaire: Art Associate → Auctioneer → Principal Auctioneer / fleet management. A commissioned concession role with per-cruise sales targets. The main professional risk is reputational: post-sale claims and traceability of certificates of authenticity — a serious auctioneer documents every lot as if it will be audited, because sometimes it is.
What this role does
A singular cruise niche: turning sea days into cultural and commercial opportunities with original and limited-edition art. Almost always concession staff (not the cruise line's): the auctioneer answers to the concession gallery for sales targets and to the Cruise Director operationally, and for safety purposes is crew like anyone else.
Typical watches
- Scheduled auctions + exhibitions on sea days
Key responsibilities
- Organise and lead onboard art auctions featuring recognised artists.
- Curate art exhibitions and educate guests about art collecting.
- Manage artwork traceability and certificates of authenticity, and the post-sale process (shipping, warranties, claims).
Operational scope
- Art gallery, auction lounges
