What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- A beauty/wellness qualification — Spanish Higher Technician in Integral Aesthetics and Wellbeing (vocational diploma, Royal Decree 881/2011) or equivalent — or business/tourism training with spa experience (as a guide).
- Usual route: an internal career with the spa concessionaire (OneSpaWorld or an equivalent operator), which trains and promotes its own managers — the position has no maritime certificate of its own.
Basic STCW
- STCW Basic Safety Training (A-VI/1).
- Crowd Management (A-V/2) according to the muster list (Regulation V/2, passenger ships).
- Maritime security awareness (A-VI/6-1).
Specific courses
- Whirlpool and wet-area hygiene per USPH/VSP (whirlpool spas are regulated in the VSP Operations Manual: chlorination, recirculation and logs — as a guide, verify the current manual).
- Legionella prevention in thermal and aerosol-generating water installations (specific training — in Spain the technical reference is Royal Decree 487/2022, as a guide).
- The concessionaire's brand training and treatment protocols (products, upselling, cabin standards).
- Spa booking and yield management: cabin occupancy per slot and revenue per guest (as a guide, the operator's dashboard).
Indicative experience
As a guide: 3-5 years as a therapist/beautician — including 2+ onboard contracts with strong sales results — or spa management in luxury hotels ashore. The step up to manager is decided by the concessionaire on sales performance and leadership, not seniority.
Observations
Typical route: therapist/beautician → spa reception/assistant manager → Spa Manager → concessionaire trainer or area supervisor. Coordinates with the Fitness Instructor (own card in this explorer) and refers treatment contraindications to the medical centre (as a guide). In an emergency the role may take on departmental first aid or passenger coordination in its zone per the role card. The job's tension is real: aggressive sales targets within a service guests perceive as relaxation.
What this role does
The spa is one of the ship's revenue centres and is usually run as an external concession (OneSpaWorld, successor to Steiner, operates the spas of much of the world fleet) with demanding sales targets. The manager answers to two bosses — the concessionaire for the numbers and the ship for the operation — and leads a multinational team of therapists whose pay depends largely on treatment and product sales. Wet areas add a real sanitary layer: a poorly maintained whirlpool is a legionella risk, not a cosmetic detail.
Typical watches
- Spa business hours + sea days (peak demand)
Key responsibilities
- Manage spa profitability: appointments, product sales and therapist productivity.
- Coordinate massage, facial treatment, hairdressing and fitness services.
- Control hygiene and maintenance of wet areas (sauna, steam, whirlpools) to the ship's sanitation standard.
- Manage the team's targets and commissions, sales reporting to the concessionaire and itinerary planning (sea days).
Operational scope
- Spa, beauty salon, gym, sauna
- Thermal areas and whirlpools under sanitary control
