Fitness Instructor

Also known as: Personal Trainer

Delivers fitness classes and personal training on board the cruise ship.

What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Internationally accredited personal-trainer certification: NASM-CPT, ACE, ACSM or NSCA-CPT; in Europe, EREPS level 3/4 registration (EuropeActive).
  • Spain: TSEAS higher vocational diploma in sports instruction (formerly TAFAD) or a CCAFYD sports-science degree — equivalences accepted by spa operators (indicative).

Basic STCW

  • STCW A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training and A-VI/6-1 security awareness.
  • STCW Regulation V/2 passenger-ship training: emergency familiarisation and crowd management (a passenger-facing role).
  • Valid seafarer medical certificate (ENG1 or flag equivalent).

Specific courses

  • Group-format certifications: Les Mills, indoor cycling, yoga (e.g. RYT-200), mat Pilates.
  • Valid first aid and CPR/AED — required by operators before joining.
  • The spa operator's consultative-sales training (revenue targets are part of the job).

Indicative experience

As a guide: 1–3 years as an instructor or personal trainer in gyms, resorts or sports centres. Typical contracts of 6–9 months via the spa concessionaire (e.g. OneSpaWorld), with its own selection and training process.

Observations

Route: instructor → fitness director → spa manager, or specialisation in wellness seminars with attached sales. The real day mixes classes, personal sessions and commercial targets: those who reject the sales component don't get their contract renewed. As crew they carry an emergency duty with periodic drills, and classes are scheduled around the itinerary (sea days = maximum load).
