What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- Usual route: internal promotion from onboard Public Area Attendant / housekeeping with company appraisal — the position has no maritime certificate of its own.
- Hospitality training valued: Higher Technician in Tourist Accommodation Management (Spanish vocational diploma, Royal Decree 1686/2007) or equivalent housekeeping training (as a guide).
Basic STCW
- STCW Basic Safety Training (A-VI/1).
- Crowd Management (A-V/2) according to the muster list (Regulation V/2, passenger ships).
- Maritime security awareness (A-VI/6-1).
Specific courses
- Passenger-ship sanitation: USPH/VSP standard (CDC Vessel Sanitation Program) and EU SHIPSAN on European itineraries.
- The cruise line's Outbreak Prevention Plan (OPP), with stepped disinfection levels (as a guide, each company defines its own levels).
- Safe handling of cleaning chemicals: dilution, incompatibilities and protective equipment.
- Cleaning and disinfection of risk zones: public restrooms, children's areas and high-touch contact points.
Indicative experience
As a guide: 2-4 years as an onboard Public Area Attendant or hotel housekeeping staff, or cleaning supervision in high-volume hotels ashore. Promotion comes sooner to those who master the inspection standard, not just the execution.
Observations
Typical route: Public Area Attendant → Public Area Supervisor → Assistant Executive Housekeeper → Executive Housekeeper (own card in this explorer). Key role during health outbreaks (norovirus, COVID): when the OPP level rises, their teams switch to intensive disinfection with virucidal products and reinforced frequencies. In USPH/VSP inspections, public restrooms and children's areas are among the most penalised points (as a guide). Manages large teams with high turnover: continuous team training is half the job.
What this role does
With thousands of passengers moving 24 hours a day, keeping common areas clean is a constant logistical challenge that directly affects guest satisfaction and public health on board: handrails, lifts and public restrooms are the main transmission routes in a gastrointestinal outbreak. The supervisor organises teams by zone and shift, with visible cleaning by day and deep cleaning overnight, always ready for an unannounced inspection.
Typical watches
- 24/7 coverage — theatres, casinos, restrooms, corridors
Key responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in all public areas of the ship.
- Coordinate shifts for continuous coverage of high-traffic spaces.
- Control dosing and safe use of cleaning chemicals according to their safety data sheets.
- Audit assigned zones to USPH/VSP inspection criteria and correct findings before the inspector does.
- Activate reinforced disinfection protocols when the ship raises its outbreak-prevention level.
Operational scope
- Theatres, casinos, bars, corridors, public restrooms, outdoor decks
- Overnight deep-cleaning teams while guests sleep
