What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- Professional photography training (photography school/vocational imaging diploma) or an equivalent professional portfolio; the diploma weighs less than the portfolio and the sales record.
- Concessionaire internal promotion: the manager position is almost always reached after contracts as Ship Photographer and Assistant Photo Manager (indicative).
Basic STCW
- STCW A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training and A-VI/6-1 security awareness.
- STCW Regulation V/2 passenger-ship training: emergency familiarisation and crowd management (a passenger-facing role).
- Valid seafarer medical certificate (ENG1 or flag equivalent).
Specific courses
- High-volume digital workflow: Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop, colour management and onboard lab printing.
- The concessionaire's digital gallery and sales systems, including facial recognition to match photos to cabins (in-house training).
- Team management: coverage planning (galas, embarkation, shore excursions), rosters and individual sales targets.
Indicative experience
As a guide: 2+ years as a shipboard photographer and at least one full contract as assistant before promotion to manager; on board leads teams of 3–10 photographers depending on ship size.
Observations
Route: Photographer → Assistant Photo Manager → Photo Manager → concessionaire fleet roles. A pure revenue centre with per-passenger and per-gala sales KPIs. Facial recognition simplifies sales but makes the department a custodian of biometric data: complying with the line's privacy policy — and GDPR on European itineraries — is as much part of the job as photography.
What this role does
Photography is a major cruise revenue centre: every gala, embarkation and port call is a sales opportunity. The Photo Manager leads the photographer team, the lab/gallery and the digital sales system, and answers to one clear KPI: revenue per passenger. Almost always concession staff with in-house training and career path.
Typical watches
- Galas, embarkation, excursions, daily events
Key responsibilities
- Capture guest photos at galas, ports and special events for sale.
- Manage photo gallery, printing and digital sales systems.
- Own the department's revenue targets and the custody of personal data (images and biometrics) per the cruise line's policy.
Operational scope
- Entire ship: staircases, galas, ports, deck
