Primary qualification
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (sail or power): a certificate of competence gained by direct practical exam with an RYA examiner — not a course certificate. Minimum age 18.
- For professional use: RYA/MCA Commercial Endorsement on the CoC, valid on MCA small-vessel coded boats (historically MGN 280 (M), consolidated into the current codes — verify) up to 24 m, in area categories 1 to 6 (up to 150 miles from a safe haven).
- Requirements to sit the exam: a valid radio operator certificate (SRC/GMDSS) and first aid certificate; qualifying sea time must be from the previous 10 years.
- With commercial endorsement: valid ENG1 medical certificate (or ML5 depending on operation).
Basic STCW
- For the Commercial Endorsement: RYA Basic Sea Survival or STCW A-VI/1-1 (survival), first aid and the PPR — Professional Practices and Responsibilities course (as a guide — verify the current RYA/MCA package).
- On the large-yacht route (OOW Yachts) the full STCW A-VI/1 package is required.
Specific courses
- RYA SRC (VHF/DSC) or higher GMDSS certificate: mandatory for the exam.
- Valid RYA First Aid: mandatory for the exam.
- Yachtmaster Theory (Coastal/Offshore level): strongly recommended as exam preparation.
- PPR and Sea Survival for the commercial endorsement.
- Radar and heavy-weather seamanship: usual add-ons before taking on offshore charter (as a guide).
Indicative experience
Exam prerequisites (RYA): 50 days at sea and 2,500 miles, with 5 passages over 60 miles — at least 2 overnight and 2 as skipper —, 5 days as skipper and half the mileage in tidal waters; all within the previous 10 years. Coastal Skipper holders reduce the mileage (verify the current RYA table).
Observations
The commercial endorsement expires every 5 years and is renewed with a valid medical and PPR (as a guide). Dataset progression: Yachtmaster Coastal → Offshore → Ocean (celestial) and, in parallel, Master < 200 GT and the MCA large-yacht route (OOW Yachts < 3,000 GT), where the YM Offshore is the usual prerequisite. It does not automatically convert into Spanish leisure or professional qualifications (PER/PPER) — verify with the DGMM by flag. The practical exam runs on the order of 8-12 hours per candidate (as a guide) and fails those who cannot demonstrate real command, not just technique.
What this role does
It is the most recognisable qualification of the RYA scheme and the de facto standard for the professional mid-size yacht skipper: a demanding practical exam before an RYA examiner, with no mandatory course, validating real miles. With the Commercial Endorsement it enables paid command under the MCA codes and is the usual prerequisite of the large-yacht route (OOW Yachts < 3,000 GT) and of the Master < 200 GT in this dataset.

Key responsibilities
- Command the vessel on offshore passages up to 150 miles from a safe haven, by day and night.
- Plan offshore passages: tides and streams, multi-day weather, ports of refuge and fuel.
- Lead the crew in manoeuvres, watches and emergencies (man overboard, flooding, towing, heavy weather).
- Apply the COLREGs, signalling and the GMDSS communications of the operating area.
- Be accountable for maintenance, the vessel's documentation and compliance with the applicable MCA code in commercial use.
