Primary qualification
- Certificate of proficiency in BASIC tanker training: A-V/1-1-1 (oil and chemical) or A-V/1-2-1 (liquefied gas tankers).
- Base: deck rating certificate (II/4 or II/5) with Basic Training A-VI/1 in force.
- Spain: DGMM basic specialty certificate for the ship type (Order FOM/2296/2002 — indicative, verify the order in force).
Basic STCW
- A-VI/1 Basic Training in Maritime Safety
Specific courses
- Ship and terminal familiarisation: manifold, PV, gauges and alarms
- Atmosphere testing: oxygen, explosimeter and toxics; enclosed spaces
- Safe hose handling, drip trays and spill response (SOPEP)
Indicative experience
Entry to basic training without prior tanker service (Reg. V/1-1.2 / V/1-2.2: approved course, or approved supervised service — indicative). Moving to the advanced level requires the recorded voyages/operations of the officer level.
Observations
The Convention clearly separates basic (assigned duties) from advanced (immediate responsibility). Five-yearly revalidation. Route: rating II/4-II/5 → ship-type basic → cargo voyages → advanced and pumpman duties on oil tankers (indicative).
What this role does
Deck rating with specific cargo duties on tankers: connecting and watching hoses and the manifold, checking atmospheres and pressures, deck rounds during operations, and support in washing, inerting and sampling, always under the immediate responsibility of an advanced-level officer.
