Primary qualification
- RYA Day Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate (sail or motor, depending on the discipline taken): a course certificate of the RYA scheme, not an STCW CoC. Minimum age 16 (as a guide — verify current RYA conditions).
- For commercial use: RYA/MCA Commercial Endorsement, valid on MCA small-vessel coded boats (historically MGN 280 (M), now consolidated into the small commercial vessel codes — verify the current code) up to 24 m in area categories 5 and 6, daylight only and in favourable conditions.
- Gives access to apply for the ICC — International Certificate of Competence (UNECE Resolution No. 40), required de facto in Mediterranean and European charter.
- With commercial endorsement: valid ENG1 or ML5 medical certificate depending on the operation.
Basic STCW
- Not required for recreational use.
- For the Commercial Endorsement: RYA Basic Sea Survival (or STCW A-VI/1-1 PST), RYA First Aid and the PPR — Professional Practices and Responsibilities online course (as a guide — verify the current RYA/MCA package).
Specific courses
- RYA Day Skipper Shorebased (theory): coastal navigation, tides, meteorology and COLREGs — strongly recommended before the practical.
- Five-day on-board Day Skipper practical course (sail or motor).
- RYA SRC: short-range VHF/DSC radio operator, essential to skipper with a radio on board.
- RYA First Aid and Basic Sea Survival: mandatory on the commercial endorsement route.
- Supervised miles and night hours towards Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Coastal: the real step up.
Indicative experience
Entry requirements for the practical (as a guide, by discipline): sail — 5 days at sea, 100 miles and 4 night hours; motor — 2 days at sea. After the qualification, a sensible progression is one or two seasons building miles as a day skipper before attempting Coastal/Yachtmaster.
Observations
RYA command ladder: Day Skipper → Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Coastal → Yachtmaster Offshore → Yachtmaster Ocean; in parallel, the MCA professional route (Master < 200 GT and OOW/Master Yachts). The Commercial Endorsement expires every 5 years and is renewed with a valid medical and PPR (as a guide). In Spain the Day Skipper does not convert into the PER nor entitle per se on Spanish-flag craft — the Spanish regime is RD 875/2014 (verify recognition by flag and residence with the DGMM). Its real value: it is the qualification with which schools and charter companies let you hire and start commanding.
What this role does
It is the first command qualification of the RYA scheme: it certifies that the holder can take full responsibility for a yacht on daytime coastal passages. It is not a professional certificate of competency in itself — it is a course certificate — but with the RYA/MCA Commercial Endorsement it becomes the entry door to paid work on small MCA-coded yachts, and it is the documentary basis for applying for the ICC that charter companies in Europe ask for.

Key responsibilities
- Skipper a sail or motor yacht on daytime coastal passages in familiar waters, in favourable conditions.
- Plan the passage: weather, tides and streams, pilotage plan, fuel and ports of refuge.
- Carry out harbour manoeuvres, anchoring, man overboard and mooring pick-up with the available crew.
- Deliver the safety briefing, assign lifejackets and harnesses and direct the crew in emergencies.
- Operate the VHF/DSC radio, apply the COLREGs and keep the track and the logbook.

- Daytime coastal navigation in familiar waters and favourable conditions
- With Commercial Endorsement: MCA-coded vessels up to 24 m in area categories 5 and 6 (up to 20/3 miles from a departure point, in daylight)
