What you need to perform it
Primary qualification
- University degree in Geophysics, Geology, Physics, Electronics or related engineering; seismic contractors also grow observers from electronics technicians through the internal ladder (trainee → observer → chief observer).
- No STCW certificate of competency: sails as special personnel within the meaning of the SPS Code 2008 (Resolution MSC.266(84)) on SPS-certificated seismic vessels (verify per vessel and flag).
- Seafarer or offshore medical certificate (ENG1/OEUK or equivalent depending on operator and region).
Basic STCW
- STCW A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training with five-yearly refresher; A-VI/6-1 security awareness.
- BOSIET/HUET when the survey uses helicopter crew changes (region-dependent — as a guide).
Specific courses
- The contractor's recording and QC systems (maker/company training on the vessel's system).
- Fundamentals of geophysical processing and data quality attributes (signal-to-noise, feathering, coverage).
- Seismic positioning and navigation (P1/P2, acoustic networks, rGPS).
- Seismic survey HSE per industry guidelines (EnerGeo Alliance, formerly IAGC — as a guide).
- Back-deck and over-water work (workboat) for streamer deployment and repair (company training).
Indicative experience
As a guide: 1-2 surveys as trainee/junior observer before holding one's own shift; 3-5 years to chief observer. The natural progression continues to party chief or to client-side processing/QC ashore.
Observations
Not to be confused with the marine mammal observer (MMO), present on the same surveys with an environmental function and its own profile in this dataset: the focus here is the geophysical data. The marine seismic market is cyclical and has consolidated into few contractors; versatility (instruments + navigation + source) is what sustains employability. On many surveys the observer executes the source shutdowns ordered by the MMO — coordination between the two is daily.
What this role does
This role is the interface between acquisition and the project's economic value: poorly validated data today becomes wrong interpretation tomorrow, and reshooting a line in mid-ocean costs tens of thousands of euros per vessel-day. The observer lives in the instrument room: kilometres of streamers, hundreds of channels and a source firing every few seconds, all under real-time quality control.
Typical watches
- 12-hour shifts in the instrument room during acquisition, on 5/5 or 6/6 week rotations (as a guide)
Key responsibilities
- Operate the seismic recording system and monitor streamer and sensor data quality in real time.
- Detect noise, gaps, interference or acquisition failures, and decide whether the line stands or is reshot.
- Verify positioning (GPS/rGPS, acoustic networks) and source synchronisation with the gun controller.
- Coordinate line changes, headings and in-water repairs with the bridge and the source and streamer technicians.
- Keep the production and QC technical log, and prepare each line's deliverables for the client.
