What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Certificate of proficiency in BASIC training for oil and chemical tankers (STCW Reg. V/1-1, section A-V/1-1 paragraph 1).
  • Base: deck-rating certificate (II/4 or II/5) with valid A-VI/1; basic-level access via approved course or supervised service (indicative).
  • Spain: DGMM basic chemical-tanker specialty certificate (indicative, verify the order in force).

Basic STCW

  • A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training

Specific courses

  • Chemical PPE: suits, compatibility gloves and escape sets
  • Multi-gas atmosphere testing and enclosed spaces
  • Hose and connection handling with aggressive products; spill response (SMPEP)
  • IBC Code notions and cargo-list segregation

Indicative experience

Chemical-tanker service with supervised participation in at least the operations the ship's training programme records; moving to the advanced certificate requires the responsibility level's service (Reg. V/1-1.5-6).

Observations

Basic V/1-1 is common to oil and chemical tankers; the chemical difference lies in PPE, segregation and Annex II. Five-yearly revalidation. Route: rating II/4-II/5 → basic → voyages → chemical advanced (A-V/1-1 paragraph 3) as officer.
