What you need to perform it

Primary qualification

  • Certificate of proficiency in BASIC training for liquefied-gas tankers (STCW Reg. V/1-2, section A-V/1-2 paragraph 1).
  • Base: deck-rating certificate (II/4 or II/5) with valid A-VI/1.
  • Spain: DGMM basic gas-tanker specialty certificate (indicative, verify the order in force).

Basic STCW

  • A-VI/1 Basic Safety Training

Specific courses

  • Cryogenic risk: cold burns, embrittlement and specific PPE
  • Gas and oxygen detection; controlled zones and ignition sources
  • Cargo-operation support: cool-down, vapour return and ESD
  • IGC Code notions and the ship's containment-type familiarisation

Indicative experience

Gas-carrier service with supervised participation in operations recorded by the ship's programme; the advanced certificate (A-V/1-2 paragraph 2) requires the responsibility level's service (Reg. V/1-2.4-5).

Observations

The LNG market rewards specialisation: the rating → gas basic → voyages → advanced route opens one of the deck's best-paid segments. Five-yearly revalidation per the Convention.
