Primary qualification
- Bridge qualification matching ship and area (STCW II/2 or II/3 by tonnage, or an equivalent national title where the dredger works inland — indicative per flag).
- Owner/OEM dredging-operation training (Royal IHC, Damen — sector references) on the specific type: TSHD, cutter (CSD) or backhoe (BHD).
Basic STCW
- Basic Safety Training STCW A-VI/1
Specific courses
- Hopper stability: densities, free surface, overflow and trim
- Dredge-monitoring systems and precision positioning (DTPS/RTK)
- Environmental works management: turbidity, disposal in licensed grounds and records for the works supervisor
- Pumps, pipelines and wear: suction, discharge and dragheads
Indicative experience
Indicative: several contracts as dredging officer/Dredge Master's mate, mastering one dredger type first; the step up comes with accredited full works cycles (ports, channels, beach nourishment).
Observations
On cutter dredgers the job leans on DP/spud and anchor handling; on TSHDs, on manoeuvring with the draghead down. Production (m³/h) against the contract spec is the metric: commands the dredging operation while the master keeps nautical command of the ship.
What this role does
Directs the vessel's dredging operation: decides how to excavate (draghead, suction, cutting), balances hopper loading against stability and draught in real time, optimises load-sail-discharge cycles and answers for meeting the contract's bathymetric accuracy and the environmental limits (turbidity, protected areas) of the works permit.

Key responsibilities
- Operate and supervise suction, cutting or dredging bucket systems.
- Control stability, settlement and distribution of sediment load during the task.
- Coordinate positioning, unloading and navigation between extraction and dumping areas.
- Maintain production without compromising security or tolerances of the channel or port.
